Great Eastern Circus. This large combiaation gave two exhibitions Sat urday, in this city. It is one of the best shows we hive seen here in some time, though there was less fine riding than we have often seen. The trapeze performance was especially fane as was Mr. Stickaey, the Clown. His witticisms had the merit of originahty, which was a great com fort. The usual annoyance of variou- traders, with song book, lemoua ie etr., had to be .en.luri?n, aid the weather was extremely hot, but we believe most of the audience were satisfied; The animals were in gootl condition and many curious ones were on exhibition. Disastrous FiRjc.About a quarter to eight o'clock last night, an alarm ol fire was given trom the market house, and on investigation it was ascertained that fire had broken out in the property belonging, to Mrs. P. K. Dickinson, situated on North Water street, i Before the fire department could place them selves in working order the entire building was in flames. The property was occupied by Messrs. Sternberger, G. F. Alderman & Bro., Geo. F. Her bert, Chas. Wessell & Co., for mercantile purposes. The flames spread rapidly from the original point until the whole property was wrapped in the firery elements. Our reporter was on the spot almost immediately after the alarm had been given, and gives his testimony to the promptness and em ry displayed by the fire companies and the Hook and Lidder organizitions. Through their exertions the fltmes were prevented from spreading to the surrounding buildings.- A fierce wind prevailed 'at the time, and -vast-damage might bare resulted had not the department worked as nobly as it did. A large vo'un teer torce organized for the purpose of saving the property, and their exertions were rewarded in the saving of large quantities of good?. We noticed crowds of thieves who, with a nertinacity worthy of a better cause, engaged them selves in breaking open and carrying off bacon, flour, and whisky. A stop was soon put;;to this little amusement by the City' Marshal, who placed guards of policemen over the removed proper ty. The loes cm hot be accurately ascertained, but our estimates place Alderman & Bro.'g at ; $1,000 ; G. F. Herbert at $6,000; Wessell & Co , $2,000; E. Teshau $700. The loss to .the estate will probably reach $7,000. Insurance was had in the Liverpool, London and Globi, Pl ocrdx, Franklin, and Home Insurance Companies. Brunswick Speaks. The following petition ot the Kepub licans of Brunswick, was presented and read in open Court, to the new Board ot County Commissioners installed on the 2d ot beptember : To the Honorable, the Commissionerg of Brunswick County : Sirs : The late .County Board of Commissioners, by a quorum of three, with a vote of two gainst one, in violation of the election law, and usurp ing powers not conferred upon them by the Constitution, have deemed it expe dient to ignore and omit in counting the legal returns ot llobeson precinct, in the township of North West, and thus to base their proclamation upon arbitrately mis-stated facts and figures.' They have, moreover, inadvertantly cer tified to the correctness of the Congres sional returns as made up by their e'erk, and as faithfully copied by ssid clerk from a sheet oi paper in the hand writing of a paid agent of the BoaTd, with the name of Neil I McKay appear ing, by interpolation, as Nei II A.
